The highlight of the film is unquestionably the demon makeup. How obvious can you get? As corny as the film is, however, the 86 minute running time flies by and the film is generally watchable if you dig bizarre 80's cult films like I do. As if the film couldn't get any cornier, the Black Roses lead singer is named Damian.

The movie is riddled with lame music lyrics like "It's a rock invasion/We're coming down to rock your town" and even lamer scenes such as a demon who lives in a speaker and swallows a man whole (the man is played by a young Vincent Pastore of "The Sopranos" fame). If "Black Roses" sounds like a corny 80's horror satire about music corrupting kids, that's because it is. As it turns out, the parents were right as the Black Roses corrupt the youth by turning some of them into murdering demons. The parents and adults of the peaceful town object to the band playing because of their satanic lyrics. The story: The rock group the Black Roses has decided to perform in a small town called Mill Basin.

To my surprise, the film isn't as bad as it sounds. Naturally, the film industry wanted to capitalize on this fad by creating a number of horror rock films such as "Trick Or Treat," "Rock "N' Roll Nightmare," and "Black Roses." As it is the horror film season, Synapse Films decided to release "Black Roses" on DVD. So while "Black Roses" isn't completely unwatchable, it isn't really a good movie and recommended for only those who really dig this type of thing. One of the many fads of the 80's included gimmicky satanic rock bands such as Gwar. Especially worth noting is a scene where future Soprano's star Vincent Pastore gets gobbled up by his stereo speakers. The special effects and puppetry are charming and one of the only things that kept my attention. It sounds like something out of an 80s children's adventure movie. There's even a sequence where the bored lead teenager is trying to woo a girl by dancing around the street, from lamppost to lamppost, saying things like "Let's paint the town red!" The score is equally out-of-place for a movie about a demonic glam rock band. Nothing happens in the first half hour of the film, which has a really strange feeling, like it's a musical from the 50s instead of an 80s rocker movie. It lacks the interesting visuals and characters of its predecessor, but makes up for that by adding more puppet-monster action. John Fasano's follow up to his bizarrely awful "Rock & Roll Nightmare" doesn't fare that much better story-wise, but it's still sort of charming. Their English teacher starts to think that maybe the PTA was right and the kids are becoming possessed by Leotarded Damien and his rocknroll. When the band stays in town to do more three more shows, the kids' become increasingly zombie-like and violent.

That's when Damien strips down to a kinkier outfit (think Cher in "If I Could Turn Back Time) and The Black Roses crank out the hard rock. They shrug their shoulders at this harmless lite-rocker and bolt for the exit. When the band shows up for the show, the PTA and other authoritative adults attend only to find a Michael Bolton type in a Don Johnson suit singing power ballads. The teachers and mayor stick by "Free speech" while the parents protest. While all the teens are stoked that their favorite band chose their sleepy small town for their first ever live concert, the parents are less than enthused with The Black Roses and their seemingly demonic lead singer Damien.
